Sunset collie...

Our friends over at http://romp-roll-rockies.blogspot.com/ wrote a post a couple months ago about a photography method.  Our mom has been wanting to try it for awhile, and she recently had the perfect opportunity.  She wasn't sure which of us to try photographing, but decided that I, Ryder, would be her guinea pig subject.  She knows that I am the most patient, and majestic of all the collies, so I was the obvious choice! (just don't tell the other collies I said that!)

For these type of pictures, you need to place your collie in front of a setting or rising sun.  You want to create a halo effect around your subject's head and body.  If you get it just right, rainbow will show up in your pictures, as if your dog as a rainbow aura surrounding him.  Mom tried for a while, but didn't succeed in creating collie rainbows.  She did, however, get some very pretty pictures...

Have you tried any interesting techniques when photographing your dogs?  Or have you had any unexpected results?

  1. I tried something similar with the boys but with their white coats the light just bounces off all over the place :)

  3. I too am curious to try that technique. I just love the silhouetted look. I love your pics. I think they turned out great!

We are feeding Silver a brand from Tractor Supply company, called 4Health Large Breed. She was on Wellness, but she started to pause before eating that, so I switch her to the 4 Health that the other dogs were eating, thinking she would like it more. Anything you might recommend?

    1. I'm not familiar with that brand. Do they sell Blue Buffalo? I switched from Wellness to Blue, because I didn't like the condition of their coats on Wellness. Blue makes an excellent senior kibble...

  4. And to answer your other question about how Grumpy died...it's sort of sensitive subject right now, but when we are ready we will post about it. But thanks for asking.

  9. You did a great job posing Ryder and your mom did a great job on those sillouette shots. I remember the post by KB and we tried it too but My Vickie can't seem to master it.

    Very well done.

  11. Great series of photos! With such beautiful subject matter, you really can't go wrong. As for the rainbow thing, I have captures that a few times this past summer without even trying. Just lucky I guess.

  12. BOL - I'm with Goose - anytime Blueberry is sitting still and not making a "sour" face is a good shot! Most of my interesting photos have happened without me even knowing what I was doing - dumb blind luck I suppose!

These are great photos - I really like them!

  15. It's really hard to get good pictures of my dog. She's more interested in the camera than in sitting still. You have beautiful dogs.
