Follow up Friday

This week we decided to join the Follow up Friday blog hop!

First - thank you to everyone who sent good wishes for Lad, we are happy to report that he is doing much better!  He has had two surgeries now.  They had to remove most of his lower jaw, because of necrosis.  He is in Kentucky, and being cared for by the awesome veterinary staff at Blue Pearl.   This is the latest update from The Arrow Fund, the rescue organization that is responsible for saving Lad, and getting him transported to Blue Pearl.

The Arrow Fund
Update- "Lad" - Today "Lad" is bright and animated ! He is doing well with his tube feedings . He does want to be up and out a bit more . Once his mouth heals we are going to try feeding him through his mouth (wet food) - very excited about this ! Many Arrow Fund supporters went to Frankfort today for Humane Lobby Day to try and get some laws passed in Kentucky. Kentucky is the ...
worst state when it comes to laws to protect animals ! So today we were fighting and speaking for "Lad" and the many other animals that need better protection. We are their voice ! Thanks to everyone for your support for "Lad" and The Arrow Fund. We truly appreciate you all ! www.thearrowfund.org

You can find more updates on Lad by going to The Arrow Fund's Facebook page or by clicking here:

Flea said "That snow looks like SO much fun! I'm so jealous. It's in the 60's here and winter seems to be gone."

Yes, the collies are loving it, and they make me smile and laugh when I watch them playing in it.  But we have had 1 - 2 snow storms every week for the last month, and I am ready for Spring to arrive!

Our friends at Cowspotblog said "Ryder has stolen my heart :)"
And we feel the same way about Reilly and Denny.  There is just something so endearing about a fluffy herding dog, isn't there? :)
And they said "I will never understand how part of the human race can be so giving and part can be the cruelest of cruel. We will help."
thank you, the way everyone has helped this boy is amazing.  Animal lovers are truly the best people in the world!
Jodi from Heartlikeadog said "Beautiful photos, so sad about Lad. I do hope his abuser is prosecuted and that Lad can recover to lead a good life."
We really hope the abuser is prosecuted for what he or she did.  The police seem to know who did this, and we can only hope the laws in Kentucky will allow them to punish this individual with more than just a fine.
Spotty spotty polkadotty said "Collie's were definitely built for snow, weren't they? :)
Oh wow - poor Lad! Who could do such a thing???? "
We have read rumors on Facebook, but the police haven't officially said yet.  The most heartbreaking thing is that another dog was recently found in Kentucky, also shot in the jaw, and sadly this dog didn't make it.   We haven't heard if both cases are related.
Stellroselong said "It is so hard to understand the meanness in the world. Sending him our prayers."
Thank you, all the prayers seem to be working for this collie boy.  He is slowly recovering, and even though he will have to be hand fed a special soft diet for the rest of his life, he still loves everyone.  Dogs are so forgiving.
Diane at colliesandlife said "I shared the post about Lad on FB, and I have donated. I am praying very hard that he pulls through. He deserves to have a long and happy life, all the more so because of this horrible event."
I am so impressed how the collie community, all over the world, has pulled together to help this special boy.  Thank you for helping him!
Onecollie said "will share as well, and will donate too, I am so sick about this, my heart is breaking for him, thank god he is safe now & on pain medication."
Thank you!  My heart is breaking too, even though he is recovering, I get sad everytime I see a picture of him.  He was such a pretty boy, and he is obviously going to struggle with eating and drinking the rest of his life.
Phyllis said "I saw this also on facebook,& couldn`t believe how cruel this was to hurt him like that.He reminds me so much of my Max with the extra long nose & face I so loved about him.Praying for healing"
Thank you!  He reminds me of my Ryder too.  And when I imagine someone doing this to Ryder, or any collie, (or ANY dog) it breaks my heart.
Scottiemom said "Oh my goodness. Poor Lad. This really and truly is heartbreaking. How can anyone do that to any creature? The really sad thing is I just heard of a very similar story about another pup who was also shot in the face and brought to the shelter I found Mr. K. Of course, we donated right away. These poor pups. Thank you for letting us know about this baby. I look forward to hearing he has fully recovered. Much love, The Scottie Mom"
Thank you!  And we just read recently that another dog was found, also in Kentucky, and also shot in the jaw.  Sadly, this one didn't make it.  We are wondering if it was the same sick person, who shot both dogs. :(
Milo and Jet said "Oh poor lad :( What horrible humans that have done this too him where sending Lad all the power of the paw we can muster for a quick and speedy recovery. Milo & Jet"
Thank you so much!
And to everyone who commented - thank you, from both me and the collies.  The outpouring of love and good wishes for Lad really is making a difference!

Follow-up Friday!

We decided to join Heart Like A Dog, in her Follow-up Friday hop.  Since Blogger does not notify anyone when they receive a response to a comment, we thought this would be a great way to respond to everyone’s comments.

The OP Pack said "Kori may have a bit of sled dog in there, wanting to be the lead dog."  It's funny that you said that, as some of my daughter's friends gave Kori the nickname "Sled dog!"  lol  And Ryder has perfected the "head tilt," and uses it shamelessly to melt my heart!

Miley said "Good luck at the show."   Thank you, we are going to need it!  It started raining here yesterday, and it's supposed to continue until tomorrow afternoon!  The dog show is outside, so it is going to be very wet and muddy!  That won't keep us home though, the "show" must go on! lol

Key West Collies said "that keep away game must have been quite a sight."  It was, and my daughter was embarrassed too.  But fortunately Kori has given up stealing bras, and is trying to turn over a new leaf!  She swears she is reformed!  :)

Cowspotdogs said "Ryder is without a doubt our favorite"  Many people feel the same way, when they look at him, they are often reminded of their own beloved childhood collie, and they just have to say hello to him.  (fortunately, he LOVES the attention)  And Kori is very sweet, and has an expression that just melts my heart when I look at her. :)

Ann - It wasn't funny at the time, but I laugh whenever I think of it too!  It's one of those memories that you will never forget! lol

24 Paws - She is a great mixture of independence and devotion.  She reminds me of one of your pack members! :)

Stellaroselong said "Ryder is so handsome, no wonder Maggie wanted to go to the dance with him...he has the kindest eyes."  Thank you for saying that!  He is a gentle, sweetheart, and I think once he is a little older, we may try visiting the residents of our local nursing home.  I know you love your three pugs as deeply as we love our collies.  I think Maggie and Ryder would be great friends if they could meet in real life!

Sam said "We think your collies are absolutely beautiful. We'd make room in our pack for a dog like Ryder too."  Thank you so much!  You know I feel the same about you and your family.  You are a very special dog, with an indomitable spirit!

Finnhoward - Thank you, we love visiting the Lighthouse park!  Unfortunately, dogs can't visit from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  So we will have to wait until the Fall to go back for another visit.

Jodi said "I wonder how you keep his coat so nice, does it require a lot of work on your part?  What is the maintenance difference in the coats between the rough or smooth?"
thank you!  Ryder's coat really only requires one good brushing a week.  People tend to shy away from getting a collie, thinking the coat will be a lot of work, but it really isn't bad.  Most collies dislike getting dirty, and they don't really enjoy getting wet, so they don't need a lot of baths to keep their coats clean.  Collies shed once a year, and the roughs shed in clumps and the smooths shed like a German Shepherd or Labrador.

GizmoGeodog said "The photo of you and him on the cliff looking out at the sea is one my favorites."  Thank you so much!  That is actually my daughter with Ryder, I took the picture.  I think it shows how bonded he is to us, and also what good company a collie can be...  And also, thanks again for hosting the Parkday, it was SO much fun!

Caren - thank you!  I can't imagine our lives without this boy!

McKinkle said "My hubby owned a tricolor rough, quite similar in appearance and character by the sound of it, so I know he will also enjoy reading Ryder's story."
Did he like it?  Do you think you will ever get a collie?  I love the rough tricolors, they are quite stunning. :)

Murray's Mouth - thank you!  I think you can tell, collies have a special place in my heart!  But I am a dog lover at heart, and every dog I meet brings an immediate smile to my face.  It's one of the reasons I was so happy to find your blog and all the others.  I love reading about everyone's beloved dogs, and cats too!

Kat - thank you!  Right now he is out of coat, and we are hoping to start entering  him in dog shows when he gets his thick, Winter coat. :)  I'm so glad I found your wonderful blog!  You chose a great name!

Amy said "She's lovely in her Prom dress...Maybe Mom needs to remember who's the royalty around there."
Thank you, she had a wonderful weekend, and was sad when her Prom weekend ended.  And never fear, the collies remind me all the time that they deserve to be spoiled as much as possible!  lol

Acd6pack said "We don't like work days either and especially don't like 12 hour shifts."
My guys are fortunate, because someone is usually home with them throughout the day.  Even when I am working both jobs.  I work long days, but the trade off, is that I get three days off to spend with the collies.  But I miss having a job where I can take my dog(s) to work with me.  When I ran a boarding kennel, I was allowed to bring my dog, Mojo, with me.  It was so nice, for both her and me.

Agnes - I think you and I are of a similar mindset...everything is more fun when your dogs are with you! :)

Kim at Golden Pines - Thank you!  And I am so happy to have discovered your wonderful blog!

Bongo - The collies all agree, your idea is perfect!  If we sneak in the car and hide, she will HAVE to take us with her!  Of course, hiding that many collies may prove challenging...

Peacefuldog - Ryder is in complete agreement - he believes he would make the perfect prom date!  But sadly, no one has asked him yet. :(

Wow - I think that's everyone!  If I missed you, I'm sorry, this is our first attempt!

Follow-up and Finding a Forever Home Friday!

Today we are doing both a “Follow-up Friday” and a “Finding a Forever Home Friday” post!

First, thank you to those of you who responded to Abby’s post yesterday.  She is working hard on your “Dear Abby” questions, and will be posting her responses soon.

The collies have been brainstorming, and they have come up with some new ideas for their blog for 2013.  On Wednesdays, most bloggers participate in the “Wordless Wednesday” blog hop, by posting just one picture.  The collies have decided to join, but with a slight twist.  Every Wednesday their Wordless post will be a picture, with the theme “Love is.”  So their first “Love Is” post will appear next week!

It’s been a while since we last did a “Finding a Forever Home Friday” post.  Sadly, many of the collies we posted about previously, are still waiting for homes.

You may remember Pal, the sweet happy boy.  He is still waiting, and would make such a wonderful companion.  Who needs a best friend?  Pal is in Virginia, and will steal your heart if you give him a chance!

Also, Tristate Collie rescue is full, they have no foster home available.  There is a collie in desperate need, and he is still in a shelter!  This shelter only keeps dogs for a limited time, so he needs immediate help.  If anyone is Indiana , and would like to adopt or foster this collie please contact TriState collie rescue as soon as possible!  http://tristatecollierescue.net

And last, but not least, Collie Rescue of South Louisiana is also in need of Foster homes.  They are taking in 2 smooth collie pups from a kill shelter, and do not have any available foster homes.  If you can help them foster, please contact Collie Rescue of South Louisiana at louisianacollies@yahoo.com or call #504-251-7879
